LANSING, MI (WTVB) – A road repair funding package for Michigan could be presented to the full state Senate today, but it’s not clear how many of the eight bills in the package will pass. It would raise gas taxes by 15-cents, a nickel a gallon every year for three years. It would also eliminate the earned Income Tax Credit and reallocate $700 million from the general fund from other programs to roads. What would be cut has not yet been specified.
The package of bills includes provisions for an income tax rate cut if state revenue comes in faster than the rate of inflation. There are also bills that everyone supports, that require warranties from road builders.
A number of Republicans are reportedly queasy about the tax hikes. Democrats say they are uniformly against much of the rest of the package, and unhappy about being left out of the process. They may not be able to find the votes to get much of it passed if they vote today.
