LANSING (WKZ0) — New rules take effect today that will streamline the freedom of information act, in the state of Michigan.
The new rules require all counties, cities and villages charge the same amount for some documents, and the lowest possible amount for others.
It also sets deadlines for governments to respond to requests for documents and sets up system of fines for violations.
Elana Polombo with the Michigan Association of Broadcasters say they worked with legislators to pass the bill to help reporters.
She says everyone can benefit from it.
The Governor signed the bill back in January and it takes July 1.
