KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — This Sunday is not only Super Bowl Sunday. It’s also “Furniture, Appliance and TV Tip-Over Prevention Awareness Day”. That’s a joint effort by the local Safe Kids Coalition and the Michigan Department of Public health to have parents take a look at their furniture to see how easy it might be for a child to tip it over onto themselves.
Advocates say every 45 minutes a child in the United States ends up in an emergency room because of a TV tipping over.
They say drawers and doors in the front of TV stands and other pieces of furniture can become a way that a child can use his or her own weight to accidentally gain leverage and tip over a piece of furniture.
Whatever is on top of that furniture can fall on them.
You might think that the problem would be easing now that TV’s are thinner and lighter, but tip-over injuries and deaths have actually increased 31% over the past ten years.
