LANSING (WKZO) — The chairs of the state House and Senate Appropriations Committees are in agreement that education funding and revenue sharing for local governments are untouchable in their work to fix the shortfall in the current fiscal year’s budget.
Senator Dave Hildenbrand and Representative Al Pscholka tell Lansing’s MIRS News that they are now estimating they have to come up with 550-million dollars, and do so without raiding the state’s Rainy Day Fund. One idea being floated is to gut funding for programs that are in the budget but haven’t been implemented yet, while nobody is guaranteeing layoffs won’t be coming for state workers.
Pscholka says he expects a clearer picture in early February.
