FREDONIA (WKZO) — Slippery roads Thursday morning proved deadly in Calhoun County in a one car accident in Fredonia Township. The Battle Creek Enquirer reports that the crash around 8:30 a.m. took the life of a 24-year-old woman who was a passenger in the vehicle and seriously injured the 24-year old driver who was flown from the scene by AireCare to Borgess Medical in Kalamazoo.
Calhoun County deputies are investigating the accident that happened on an icy stretch of pavement along 13-mile road near K-Drive South. No names have been released. Deputies reported the car slid out of control into a ditch and then struck a tree. The fatal victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
In another icy road related accident, northbound I-69 in Tekonsha Township had to be shut down for several hours after a semi caught on fire and was stopped in the middle of the highway near O-Drive South. The truck driver from Chicago told deputies his tires caught on fire as he was traveling down the road shortly before 5 a.m. and when he realized what was happening, he tried to pull over and stop but couldn’t because of the ice covered surface.
There were no injuries but the flames heavily damaged the truck cab and part of the trailer that was loaded with cases of water. The trucker was cited for equipment violations.
