CAMBRIDGE (WKZO) — WalMart supercenters are expanding the American waistline. That’s one of the conclusions of a new report published the National Bureau of Economic Research. The researchers found higher rates of obesity in areas dense with supercenters.
The report notes that big-box retailers and WalMart in particular have made junk food increasingly cheap, plentiful and readily available. Their research indicates that the proliferation of WalMart supercenters explains a rise in obesity in the US.
A co-author of the study said, “We buy in bulk. We tend to have more food around. It takes more and more discipline and self-control to not let that influence your weight.”
