WASHINGTON D.C. (WKZO) — Homeland Security has been refunded for a week, but only for a week as majority Republicans try to figure out a way to defund the President’s executive order on Immigration, without bringing the whole department to a grinding halt.
A Republican stopgap funding bill backed by John Boehner came up short, handing the Speaker an embarrassing loss, when the far right wing of his own party refused to back his play.
After that measure failed, Congressmen Bill Huizenga and Fred Upton joined the majority and voted Friday night to support a Senate measure to keep Homeland Security funded for another week.
Rep. Justin Amash voted to let the funding lapse.
If money runs out next week TSA workers, the Coast Guard, and Border Patrol officers would be expected to report to work whether or not they were being paid, thousands of others would be furloughed.
It would hit Michigan particularly hard because we have Coast Guard Stations and some of the nation’s busiest border crossings and international airports.
