KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP (WKZO) — Voters in Kalamazoo Township have overwhelmingly approved a 9.75-million dollar bond issue to fix the local streets in the neighborhoods that wrap around Kalamazoo’s north and west sides.
935-voters said “yes” and 606-voters said “no’, giving the measure an easy win.
Supervisor Ron Reid says he was “shocked” by the margin of victory. He expected it to be a lot closer than that.
Just under 10% of the registered voters in the Township participated in Tuesday’s election.
Reid says he already has a meeting scheduled with the County Road Commission on Thursday and will have a busy spring getting out bids and getting contracts approved to begin the work yet this construction season.
He says it will take about three years to bring all the township roads up to good condition.
Major streets and state roads will depend on whether the State’s road funding measures pass this spring.
He knows that there are some Lansing officials who may view the Township’s success as a harbinger for what will happen on May 5th, but he is not at all convinced that the two ballot items compare. Reid says their proposal was simple, more money for roads.
he says the state’s proposal is quite a bit more complicated.
