KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — Kalamazoo’s Metro Transit Authority will be asking voters in the metropolitan area who have access to line haul service to approve a .75 mil assessment this summer.
The request would be for five years. They had originally planned to put it on the May ballot but they have decided to get out of the way of the statewide transportation issue, which has now been placed on that ballot. Instead they will hold their vote in August.
Only a portion of their revenue comes from local taxpayers. The majority comes from the fare box and from federal and state subsidies.
Metro Authority Chair Linda Teeter says as part of their “Bold Vision” they hope to expand service later at night and on the weekends as part of the bargain.
Teeter will make her annual report to the County Board Tuesday evening and once again announce their plans.
She says talks are underway with Kalamazoo Valley Community College to continue service to the main campus after Texas Township opted not to be part of the authority.
