LANSING (WKZO) — So what is next for the Couser Gamrat scandal?
The House Business Office investigation, which reportedly cites violations will go to the special select committee.
They could recommend anything from doing nothing to expelling the pair.
Speaker Kevin Cotter says explulsion has rarely been required. Its only been approved twice in the history of Michigan. Members usually resign before it gets to that.
Cotter says all it takes is a super-majority, there are no standards for evidence or criteria to meet for the house to take action. It’s up to each member to decide their threshold for voting for any level of discipline,
from requiring a criminal offense to whether the representative simply made the House look bad.
The Case could also be referred to an outside agency for a review of any possible criminal charges.
Right now it really depends on what the Business Office found.
The question is, will Democrats go along? Forcing the disgraced pair to haunt the chambers through the next election cycle might sound like an appealing way to make the Republicans look bad but there is always the chance that it would backfire, and sting the Democrats.
