DETROIT (WKZO)- The Detroit Tigers offense is stuggling of lately as they only scored nine runs in their four game series to the Yankees. This includes the one run they scored today as the Tigers fell to the New York Yankees today 2-1.
The Tigers lone run came in the first inning when Victor Matinez hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Anthony Gose.
The Yankees scored the tying run in the sixth inning as Tigers starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez was called for a balk. Manager Brad Ausmus came out of the dugout to argue the call and said the magic words and was ejected.
In the top of the eighth inning the Yankees had runners at the corners and Brian McCann hit a hard ground ball to first base and the ball bounced off of Miguel Cabrera’s glove and Ellsbury came in to score giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
Both starting pitchers were very good in today’s game. Tigers starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez (1-2) threw 6 1/3 innings giving up one run on one hit while walking four and striking out eight.
Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka (2-1) pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up one run on three hits while walking two and striking out six.
Tigers reliever Tom Gorzelanny (0-1) takes the loss.
The Tigers now will begin a weekend series against the Cleveland Indians on Friday. The Tigers will send Shane Greene (3-0 0.39 ERA) to the mound while the Indians will counter with Danny Salazar (1-0 3.00 ERA). Broadcast time is at 6:40 pm on 590 WKZO.
