Alfredo Simon turned in another good start for the Detroit Tigers (11-2) as they defeated the New York Yankees (6-7), 2-1 on Monday night at Comerica Park.
Simon (3-0, 1.74 ERA) went 7.1 innings for Detroit and allowed just one run on seven Yankees’ hits.
The sole run allowed by Simon was delivered by Mark Teixeira on a solo home run to right field.
C.C. Sabathia (0-3, 4.35 ERA) looked equally as dominant for the Yankees, as he took a shutout into the seventh inning. However, Detroit broke up Sabathia’s scoreless outing with a string of hits starting with a Rajai Davis single.
After Victor Martinez was intentionally walked with first base open and two outs, JD Martinez singled to shallow center, scoring Davis. Yoenis Cespedes followed up with a single of his own, scoring Victor Martinez, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
The Tigers’ bullpen proved steady yet again, with Joba Chamberlain setting up Joakim Soria’s fifth save of the season.
The two teams will resume the three-game series at Comerica Park tomorrow evening, with coverage beginning on AM 590 WKZO at 6:40 p.m.
