DETROIT (WKZO) –If there is anything that a zoo generates by the truckload other than smiles, it’s manure.
The Detroit Zoo plans to put the 400-tons of zoo poo they produce annually into an anaerobic biodigester, create methane to run generators, shaving about 80-thousand dollars a year off their utility bill.
That’s about a 7 to 8% savings.
Chief Operating Officer Gerry VanAcker calls that Zoo Poo Power.
Other zoos pile it up and sell it to gardeners to raise funds. That’s what the Binder Park Zoo does with their “Zoo Doo” It sells for $30 a truckload.
