OSHTEMO (WKZO) — Monday, most of the mail that used to go through the processing center on Ninth Street will instead be trucked up to Grand Rapids for sorting and redistribution.
That means if you mail a letter or pay a bill cross town, that letter will be trucked up to Kent County and back before it reaches its final destination.
Union Postal employees argued that making “snail mail” more snail-like probably wasn’t the greatest strategy for the struggling Postal Service, but directors said the big crisis was budget deficits due to over capacity.
Since the consolidation plan was first announced nearly five years ago now, there have been several delays, and in the meantime, many of the workers who might have lost their jobs have found placement elsewhere.
The Ninth Street facility is just one of dozens across the nation, and three in Michigan that have been consolidated to cut costs.
