Back to school means drivers need to take special care

DEARBORN (WKZO) -- What’s only thing that may be more dangerous than a distracted driver on a school day? A distracted student texting as they walk to school or the bus stop.

At least a driver is in a steel cocoon, a pedestrian is exposed.

AAA’s Susan Hiltz says she has seen children text while they ride bicycles.

The big fear is they will stray out in front of a bus or someone rushing to work, if they aren’t paying attention.

Over 55 million children across the United States have either already started school or soon will, and about 13 percent of those school children typically walk or bike to school.

Most of the rest of them will be walking to bus stops.

Hiltz says drivers need to be especially vigilant now that the children are on the move again, especially if you are driving around before sunup, but particularly after school hours.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says 42% of the car-pedestrian crashes that result in fatalities for juveniles occur between between 4 and 8pm.

More than one-fifth of all children under age 15 killed in traffic crashes were pedestrians.
