Oakland, CA (WKZO) – The Detroit Tigers held off a 9th inning rally from the Oakland Athletics for a 5-4 victory and earning a split of the four-game series.
Come off his worst start of the season, Rick Porcello collected his eighth win of the year despite walking a career high six batters. The A’s could only manage two runs off of Porcello, coming on a two-run home run from Nick Punto in the fourth, giving the A’s a 2-1 lead. Porcello struck out four over 5 2/3 innings and left the game in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and a 3-2 lead, before Ian Krol got Derek Norris to pop out killing the threat.
Miguel Cabrera hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the fifth and scored the fifth and decisive run on a two-run double from Victor Martinez in the seventh.
A night after blowing his fourth save of the season, Joe Nathan closed out the ninth but not before allowing two runs and stranding the game winning run on first.
The Tigers continue their west-coast road trip with three games in Seattle. Justin Verlander takes the mound in the opener against Hisashi Iwakuma. First pitch is set for 10:10pm.
