Oakland, CA (WKZO) – It took the Oakland Athletics eight plus innings to final crack the scoring column but when they did they made it count.
Josh Donaldson’s three-run walk off home run were the only runs the A’s scored all game as they defeated the Detroit Tigers 3-1 on Wednesday night.
Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the ninth inning and having no luck off of Tigers’ starter Anibal Sanchez, the A’s got a one out double from Coco Crisp, chasing Sanchez from the game. Joe Nathan came on in relief and after allowing a single to put runners on the corners, Donaldson stepped to the plate and belted the first pitch he saw over the left field wall.
Sanchez dominated the A’s, allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out nine. Sanchez’s night ended after 111 pitches before Nathan blew his fourth save in 16 opportunities.
Scott Kazmir pitched a complete game for the A’s and exited the game after nine innings pitched in a line for the loss but recorded the win after Donaldson’s home run. Kazmir struck out eight while allowing six hits and issuing no walks. The only blemish on his record for the night was a solo home run he allowed to Torii Hunter in the fourth inning, Hunter’s 8th home run of the season.
The Tigers and A’s wrap up their four-game series at 3:35pm on Thursday afternoon. Rick Porcello (7-2, 3.88 ERA) looks to end the series on a high note for the Tigers, who have lost eight of 10 after winning six of seven. Jesse Chavez (4-2, 2.61 ERA) will get the nod of the A’s.
