Oakland, CA (WKZO) – Raja Davis scored the game-winning run as the Tigers ended their three-game losing streak with a 6-5 victory over the Oakland A’s on Tuesday night in a matchup featuring the top two teams in the American League.
Davis entered the game in the 8th inning as a pinch-runner for JD Martinez, who walked, and quickly advanced to third on a passed ball and stolen base before scoring on a fielder’s choice groundout from Austin Jackson.
Al Albuquerque picked up the win in an inning of relief of Tigers’ starter Max Scherzer. Scherzer was less than stellar, allowing five earned runs in six innings, while striking out four and giving up eight hits and issuing two walks. Joba Chamberlin pitched a scoreless 8th and Joe Nathan set down the A’s in order to pick up his 12th save.
Miguel Cabrera had two hits and two RBIs, including a solo home run in the 3rd inning, giving the Tigers the lead 3-2. Torii Hunter also hit a solo home run, his coming in the 7th inning, tying the game at four.
A’s starter Sonny Gray allowed four earned runs on eight hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out five. Fernando Abad took the loss for Oakland.
The Tigers and A’s continue their four-game series on Wednesday night. Anibal Sanchez takes the mound for Detroit and Scott Kazmir will get the start for the A’s. First pitch is set for 10:05pm.
