Boston, MA (WKZO) – Max Scherzer tossed six shutout innings and with a little help from the bullpen the Tigers completed a 1-0 shutout over the Boston Red Sox in a rematch of last year’s ALCS in the opener of a three game series at Fenway Park on Friday night.
Scherzer (6-1) allowed three hits and four walks over six-plus innings while lowing his league-leading ERA from 2.04 to 1.83. Scherzer struck out seven and is now tied for the AL lead in strikeouts along with Jon Lester, the Red Sox Friday night starter.
The Tigers scored the game’s only run in the first inning on an RBI single from Torii Hunter. Hunter finished with two hits.
Evan Reed and Ian Krol combined for a scoreless seventh and Joba Chamberlain retired the side in the eighth before Joe Nathan pitched a perfect ninth for his 11th save of the season.
Lester (2-3) went five innings and struck out seven.
The game was delayed 47 minutes by rain in the top of the fourth inning.
The Tigers and Red Sox continue their series on Saturday night with first pitch set for 7:10pm. Rick Porcello (6-1, 3.22ERA) gets the nod for the Detroit and John Lackey (5-2, 3.57) will start for Boston.
