KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo was recently ranked as one of the world's most underrated beer cities by US News and World Report, and one local business is taking pride in that. Johanna Kelly, with the Kalamazoo Beer Exchange, says that the brewing community in the area just seems to have more passion for its work than in many other places. She thinks that's because there's a spirit of positivity in Kalamazoo.
"We're up there with South Africa and New Mexico and Chile," Kelly told WKZO. "It's all these places that love beer. One of the things that strikes me about these places is these are all cities where the passion for community and for local culture is reflected in the beer culture. Kalamazoo is the perfect place for that. We have people who are here making beer because they love Kalamazoo, and they love beer."
US News and World Report put Kalamazoo in with seven other cities around the world with an underrated beer scene. The magazine's article cites Kalamazoo's Beer Week, West Michigan Beer Tours, and Bell's Brewery as among the reasons why Kalamazoo is underrated. The other cities to make the list appear below:
Saint Petersburg, Florida
Cape Town, South Africa
Santa Fe, New Mexico
San Diego, California
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
