NILES (WKZO) -- Niles police have released the name of the armed robber who was gunned down in a confrontation with officers behind a Long John Silver’s late Friday night.
They say 39-year-old Eddie Macon Jr. of Elkhart had just perpetrated a robbery at the restaurant and had not yet made his escape when he tried to get out the back door.
He saw officers and ducked back in, and then came back out and according to the news release “engaged” the Niles officers and State Troopers who responded to the robbery.
They opened fire wounding the suspect. He died later at the hospital.
The money was recovered.
Macon was on parole for a crime committed in Berrien County and also had a record for a pair of misdemeanors committed in Elkhart.
