Schuitmaker legislation would expand access to heroin antidote

LANSING (WKZO) -- The state Senate is expected to take action soon on legislation sponsored by Senator Tonya Schuitmaker of Van Buren County expanding access to the heroin antidote Narcan. Emerald Haan of Kalamazoo is a former addict who testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday that people are being dropped on the side of the road when they overdose because others are scared to take them to the hospital for treatment. Narcan can be used to prevent an overdose death by counteracting the effect of heroin. Schuitmaker testified that it could be prescribed by doctors to family members or friends of heroin users, but should not be viewed as giving permission to shoot up with the illegal narcotic.
