KALAMAZOO (WKZO)--A murder trial is underway in a chilling and unusual case of child abuse in Oshtemo Township.
In opening arguments, prosecutors contended that 22-year-old Toren Hains was the only one caring for 14-month-old Zoie Johnston when the infant suffered fatal head trauma and other injuries that were indicative of child abuse on December 30th 2012.
The baby died at Bronson’s Pediatric Trauma Unit the next day.
An autopsy also revealed the child had alcohol and marijuana in her blood stream.
The defense claims Hains accidentally dropped the child, causing the injuries.
Hains is charged with open murder, felony murder and first degree child abuse and could get life if convicted.
Testimony will continue today.
