Michigan businesses calling for ban on discrimination against gay workers

LANSING (WKZO) -- Michigan residents can currently be legally fired from their jobs if they're gay, but a push by major companies could bring about a change.

The Michigan Competitive Workforce Coalition includes the likes of Whirlpool, AT&T, Steelcase, Consumers Energy and Blue Cross Blue Shield and is calling for a ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. There are 29 states, including Michigan, that don't have protection for gays and lesbians in employment law.

The conservative Family Research Council opposes the push, saying the firms that want the law changed are giving up their own freedom and adding they don't believe sexual orientation is comparable to race when it comes to civil rights.
