Lt Gov Signs Legislation Replacing an Ugly Word

Lt Gov Brian Calley
Lt Gov Brian Calley

UNDATED (WHTC) -- In a fitting end to the month of March, Lt. Gov. Brian Calley signed legislation that preserves the dignity of residents with developmental disabilities by removing the terms “mentally retarded” and “mental retardation” from state statutes.   The ARC-Advocacy and Resource Center has been helping those with cognitive disabilities since 1950.  Peg Fakler, Director of Family Services at the ARC says they encourage “People First” language, wherein you don't use a person's disability to describe them.  She also is encouraging those with disabilities to take part in a National Day Out Event tomorrow.  For more information, contact the ARC at 616-738-8570 or visit http://arc-resources.com
