DETROIT (WKZO) -- A new position inside General Motors has been created to oversee the company's safety efforts.

GM CEO Mary Barra has released a statement announcing the appointment of Jeff Boyer as vice president for global vehicle safety. Boyer has 40-years experience with the automaker and will be in charge of identifying and resolving product safety problems.

GM has issued several recalls recently for problems ranging from faulty ignitions switches to brake and possible airbag problems. The repairs are expected to cost GM 300-million dollars.
