WASHINGTON D.C. (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell is in the nation’s capital to meet with Congressman Fred Upton and Senators Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin to update them on the city’s ongoing effort to get the Allied Paper toxic waste dump completely cleaned up and not just capped with a plastic cover.

He says he also wants to explore alternative solutions with the EPA like using bacteria or enzymes to neutralize the PCB contamination at the site.

He says the technology for clean-ups must have improved in the last 50 years.

Right now the EPA is nearing the decision on the route they want to take, and local officials and protestors are using all the influence and arm-twisting they can to steer it itoward a solution the city prefers.
