KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell was one of 90-mayors invited to the White House to rub elbows with the President and participate in Makers Day activities.
It’s an effort to promote invention and innovation, from the very practical to the almost whimsical, like a two ton mechanical giraffe that talks, mobile science labs and cutting edge 3-D printers that can print out pancakes with pictures on them.
President Obama says Made in America still means something and we need to do more of it.
Hopewell was one of only 20 mayors invited to participate in a policy discussion with White House Staff on economic, infrastructure and community revitalization.
They didn’t pick his name out of a hat. He was picked because Kalamazoo is a leader, lowering barriers for digital start-ups.
Hopewell hopes the contacts he makes and the ideas he gets from the conference will help bring more high-tech jobs to Kalamazoo.
