DETROIT, MI (WKZO) -- The Tigers gladly settled for a series win this afternoon, with a second straight victory over the Twins, 4-3. The win was an edge-of-the-seater, with Torii Hunter scoring off J.D. Martinez's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 9th, after nearly four tied innings.
Detroit built a 2-0 lead by the 2nd inning, which they held onto for a couple more innings. Minnesota, however, started picking up speed in the 6th, getting three runs almost immediately--and gaining a one-run lead.
Victor Martinez scored off a Nick Castellanos hit in the bottom of the 6th to tie things up, but no more runs came til the 9th.
Rick Porcello had it tough in the previously mentioned 6th inning, but otherwise tossed five scoreless innings, and an additional scoreless 7th after the Twins' string of runs. Relief pitcher Joe Nathan (3-2) got the win after pitching a scoreless 9th.
Detroit begins a home series against Kansas City tomorrow night, with Justin Verlander (6-6) going to the mound. Broadcast time is set for 6:40 PM on 590 WKZO.
