KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- It was not your usual trash fire, primarily because this one occurred indoors and took a building with it.
The fire at the Republic Services Waste transfer station off Cork Street was reported just after 4 a.m. Saturday.
Fire crews from Kalamazoo, Comstock and Kalamazoo Township all responded to help put out the fire. There were no reported injuries as a result of a smelly smoky fire but the blaze did considerable damage to the steel framed building on Gembrit Court, which has since been demolished.
Fire fighters were forced to run hoses a couple of blocks because of a broken hydrant.
They had to fight the fire from outside the building because the interior was fully involved, and the roof partially collapsed.
It closed Cork between Emerald Drive and Sprinkle much of the morning.
Heavy equipment had to be brought in to sift through the debris to put out hot spots and fire crews were at the scene much of the day.
Heavy equipment parked near the building was damaged by the radiant heat.
