DETROIT (WKZO)- It was a pitcher's duel through eight innings and then both teams offense came to life with the Toronto Blue Jays offense producing a little more as they defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-3. Anibal Sanchez pitched another gem going seven innings giving up no runs on two hits while striking out five.
In the ninth Joe Nathan came in and couldn't get the job done as he gave up four runs on two hits while walking two batters. Nathan looked visibly frustarted while he was pitching. Brett Lawrie did the most damage in the ninth as he he hit a three run home run to put the Blue Jays up 5-0.
The Tigers tried to fight back in the bottom of the ninth as they drew two walks before J.D. Martinez hit a three run home run to cut the Blue Jays lead to 5-3. The next batter Don Kelly struck out on three pitches to end the game.
Before Martinez's home run, the Tigers had been held scoreless for 19 2/3 innings.
The Tigers will look to get the offense rolling tomorrow as they battle the Blue Jays again. The Broadcast will begin at 6:40 pm on AM 590 WKZO. Rick Porcello (8-2 3.82 ERA) will take to the mound for the Tigers and the knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (5-4 4.30 ERA) will get the start for the Blue Jays.
