They say the river is safe but some are still concerned

CALHOUN COUNTY (WKZO) -- Don’t expect to find WMU chemistry Professor Mike Barcelona taking leisurely dips in the Kalamazoo River above the Morrow Dam.

He says Enbridge and health officials may say the stretch of river contaminated by the Enbridge Oil Spill is safe now for recreational use, but he’s sure its not entirely clean.

He says there is still oil out there, and he has sensitive skin.

Four years and a billion dollars later, Barcelona says he sampled the soil where the lake behind the Ceresco Dam had been, and found a variety of oil samples.

Saturday is the day that Enbridge counts as the actual anniversary of the oil spill because it’s the day the spill was reported.

By that time the broken pipe had been gushing oil for the better part of a day.
