COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - A three hour police standoff in Branch County with a barricaded gunman who had taken hostages at an adult entertainment store this morning north of Coldwater ended shortly after 1 pm Tuesday afternoon when the suspect was taken into custody. No injuries were reported. Details of the arrest were not immediately available.
The suspect had fled an armed robbery around 9:40 am Tuesday morning at a CVS pharmacy in Angola, Indiana. He was pursued by police on northbound I-69 and the chase was continued by Michigan State Police. The suspect pulled off the interstate at the Jonesville exit, where the Lion’s Den store is located a short distance off the highway.
According to scanner accounts of the incident, the man immediately entered the store, locked the door, and appeared to take several employees hostages at gunpoint. Authorities established contact with the suspect by phone through Central Dispatch. About an hour after the holdup occurred, he told police he wanted to surrender but also asked to keep talking with 911. It was also reported he had taken a number of pills, possibly the prescription medicine he made away with from the CVS robbery. Around 11:15 am, all of those in the building except for one female clerk were released by the suspect. A State Police Tactical Unit took command of the scene shortly after the noon hour.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Department is the lead agency continuing the investigation of the situation that unfolded at the Lion’s Den.
