KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The suspect in Sunday’s shooting in the Edison neighborhood has been formally charged in family court with assault with intent to commit murder.
The Suspect is 15-year-old Malik Foster-Bey. He is reportedly a close friend of murder victim Michael Day, who was gunned down a month ago not far from the spot where Sunday’s shooting occurred.
Was it retaliation? Public Safety says the victim in Sunday’s shooting had a known gang affiliation, and over 30-run-ins with police.
He was shot in the shoulder and was walking away from the crime scene when police stopped him.
Foster-Bey will be tried as an adult, but the judge will have the option to sentence him as a juvenile or an adult, depending on the verdict and what they learn at trial and through court screening.
Concerned about the violence occurring in the Edison neighborhood, a group of adults are planning to walk through the are this evening to find out what kind of activities and facilities are needed to give teens something to do other than to join gangs and cause problems.
Dance Outlaw, headcoach of the West Michigan Tigers a semi pro football team says they want to learn first hand what is needed, and then try to provide it.
They plan to meet at Kik Pool at 6 pm and start their walking tour soon after.
