Sherman Lake YMCA's latest effort is the development a creative inclusive outdoor play space called The Park where anyone, especially youth, can find outside activity irresistible and accessible. The Park features a zero entry “splashpad” along with accessible play structures, a picnic gathering area and a multi-purpose court for basketball, wiffleball, pickle ball, tennis, roller hockey and more. Surrounding the Park is a 1/6th mile track that links to the trail head of 300 acres of nature trails.
2014 marks the 20th Anniversary for Sherman Lake YMCA and the celebration will begin with a Ribbon Cutting Event for The Park and Splashpad on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at 1pm.
Volunteers, supporters and members will join together to ceremonially turn on the splashpad and celebrate with a day in The Park. This weekend is the official kick-off of the summer camp season at Sherman Lake YMCA. Over 2,000 children will get a chance to play and exercise in The Park this summer for summers to come.
The Park will increase Sherman Lake YMCA's inclusive capacities to serve the community in many ways:
• The Park will allow us to better serve our campers with special needs with an inclusive new multi faceted, centrally located, adaptive and accessible play and fitness space. In June, Sherman Lake YMCA hosted the Muscular Dystrophy State Camp and Camp Discovery for those children with epilepsy and will welcome over 350 other summer campers with special needs. The Sherman Lake YMCA is a fully ADA accessible YMCA Camp in the country.
• The inclusive space allows us to better serve the Pre-Kindergarten through Third Grade populations with age-specific accessible play structures and activities.
• The Park will provide a creative play and fitness area for our existing campers ,YMCA members and community groups encouraging outdoor activity in a safe environment.
• The new splashpad will provide a new water element to keep ALL children cool and having fun on those hot summer days.
