Rick Porcello throws second straight shutout; Tigers defeat Athletics 3-0

DETROIT (WKZO)- Rick Porcello threw a his second career shutout against the Texas Rangers last week in a 6-0 victory.  It didn't take him long to pick up his third career shutout as Porcello got it in his next start as he helped lead the Detroit Tigers to a 3-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics.  The last time a Tigers pitcher pitched consecutive shutouts was back in 1986 when Jack Morris pitched three consecutive shutouts.

Porcello only gave up four hits over his nine innings of work and only needed 95 pitches to do it.  Porcello also did not stikeout or walk a batter.  The last Tiger to pitch a shutout without a walk or strikeout was Doyle Alexander back in 1989.

The Tigers broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Miguel Cabrera scored as Torii Hunter grounded out to short.  The Tigers exteneded the lead in the sixth innings as J.D. Martinez hit a two run home run to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.  It was Martinez's 10th home run of the season.

The Tigers will try for the sweep tomorrow as the Tigers send Justin Verlander (6-7 4.80 ERA) to the mound.  The A's will counter with Jesse Chavez (6-4 2.94 ERA).  Broadcast time tomorrow is at 12:40 pm on AM 590 WKZO.
