ALLEN PARK, MI (WKZO) – The Detroit Lions have ended a two-week search for a new coach with the hiring of Jim Caldwell on Tuesday. Following a mid-season collapse and 7-9 finish in 2013, the team parted ways with Jim Schwartz on December 30th.

Caldwell was the first candidate to interview with Detroit followed by followed by former Texans coach Gary Kubiak, former Titans coach Mike Munchak and Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. Thought to be the top choice for the Lions, Whisenhunt recently accepted the head coaching job with the Tennessee Titans, leaving the Detroit job open for Caldwell.

Caldwell has made two head coaching stops, from 2009 to 2011 with the Indianapolis Colts, and 1993 to 2000 with Wake Forest. He most recently served as the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens.

At the helm of the Colts, Caldwell replaced Tony Dungy, posting a 26-22 record in three seasons. The Colts appeared in the Super Bowl in his first season, and reached the playoffs the following season.

Jim Caldwell turns 59 on Thursday.
