KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- What’s it like being homeless in near arctic conditions. Rob Oakleaf at Ministry with Community says it’s a day to day struggle for those who, for one reason or another, find themselves without shelter at this time of the year.
He says there are a few hardy souls who try to live outdoors during the winter months, but weather like this drives them to shelters.
He says they have been handing out gloves and scarves, new underwear and sock and could always use donations of those items to help the area’s homeless survive another day.
The Kalamazoo Gospel Mission has set up a special warming room for the homeless to come in during the day and get out of the dangerously cold temperatures. It’s also provides a space for school students who have been at the shelter during the day because of the snow-days.
Executive Director Michael Brown says its emergencies like this that stretches their facilities beyond its limit.
It’s the largest overnight shelter for the homeless in the community.
