COMSTOCK PARK (WKZO) -- It appears a work crew using a space heater in a luxury box ignited a fast moving fire that consumed half of the luxury boxes and concession areas at Fifth Third Ballpark north of Grand Rapids.
The smoke could be seen for miles. Fire crews not only had to battle the wind whipped flames, but the intense cold and the fact that all the fire hydrants were on the other side of the ball park. The Co-owners don’t know how just yet, but say they plan to rebuild.
Denny Baxter says they made a commitment and they are going to stand by it.
Co-partner and CEO Lew Chamberlain was out of town when the fire began and rushed back when he got word. He says it may not be ready by opening day, but it will be by the time the League All-star game comes to town.
They still have to huddle with their insurance carrier and their lawyers before they can start rebuilding.
