West Michigan lawmaker proposing resolution to honor "under God" in Pledge of Allegiance

LANSING (WKZO) -- A state lawmaker from west Michigan is keeping up the fight to maintain the "under God" part in the Pledge of Allegiance. State Senator Rick Jones represents Allegan, Barry, and Eaton Counties. He and State Representative Tom Leonard are working on a resolution that will recognize the 60th anniversary of "under God" being in the pledge, and also call on Congress to take action to make sure the words stay there.

The resolution from Jones and Leonard notes that the words “under God” were inserted into the Pledge of Allegiance by a Joint Resolution that was introduced by Michigan natives, Congressman Charles Oakman, Republican of the 17th District, and Republican US Senator Homer Fergusson, before being signed by President Dwight Eisenhower on June 14th, 1954. It will be the first piece of legislation that Jones introduces in the new year.

Jones notes in a press release that the words "under God" were first said by President Abraham Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address.
