VAN BUREN COUNTY (WKZO) -- Thursday morning’s blizzard like conditions and icy road surfaces is being blamed for a number of slide-offs and two serious chain reaction collisions along I-94 in Van Buren County.
The first and the worst occurred near the 47-mile marker east of Hartford when five semis, four cars and an Indian Trails bus plowed into each other just before 10 a.m.
It took over four hours to clear away the wreckage.
The Bus Driver suffered moderate injuries and eight of the 18 passengers on the bus required treatment for minor injuries.
They were all taken to the ISD Conference Center in Lawrence until another bus could be dispatched to get them.
About 90-minutes after that first crash, two semi-s tangled near Decatur, completely shutting down eastbound traffic for three hours because one of the trucks rolled on its side.
Lt. Dale Hinz expects that stretch of the Interstate to remain a problem until temperatures rise enough for salt to melt ice. That may not be until sometime this weekend.
