LANSING (WKZO) -- It was reportedly human error that allowed a quadruple murderer to escape from an Ionia prison and human initiative that helped recapture him.

Earlier this month Michael Elliot escaped, carjacked a woman and headed to a gas station in Indiana.  When Elliot took the keys and went to pay for gas, the woman called 911 and the dispatcher told her to go in to the station, lock herself in the restroom, give them a description of Elliot and wait for police to arrive.

The dispatchers were given a meritorious service award and proclamation Monday to honor their quick thinking that ultimately led to the woman being freed and Elliot locked up once again.
