This may be the last sub-zero morning in Kalamazoo this Winter

GRAND RAPIDS (WKZO) – Wednesday morning may be the last one that begins with below zero temperatures this season, ending this latest blast of winter weather.

Southwest Michigan has been below the freezing mark for over three weeks..

National weather service meteorologist Jared Maples in Grand Rapids says forecast models are telling them that the Jet Stream that has brought one 'Alberta clipper' after another out of the Canadian plains and pounded the Great Lakes with snow and occasional subzero temperatures will be heading to the west next week.

That will be a game changer.

Maple says we could see highs above freezing most of next week.

But for every silver lining, there is a dark cloud and that could be flooding. Maples says a warm wave with rain could be a real problem for low lying areas if it all melts too quickly, and especially if there is also a rain event.

Maples says one benefit of having all this snow is that it will leave farm fields with a good supply of moisture going into the growing season. It will also help replenish water in the Great Lakes basin, which had been getting a littlelow in recent years.

He says the shift in the Jet Stream couldn’t come at a better time, with Lake Michigan 60% frozen over, and the area feeling fewer benefits from the lake effect, it might have resulted in an even colder end to February.
