PITTSBURGH (WKZO)- The Detroit Tigers may have been tired from yesterday's game as it showed the first few innings of play. Justin Verlander pitched only one inning giving up four runs on four hits while walking two and striking out three. Verlander had to leave the game due to soreness in his right shoulder.
The Pirates led 5-1 after the first inning and the Tigers also had three errors. The second inning did not get any better as Justin Miller came in and he gave up three runs and the Pirates were up 8-1 after two innings of play.
The Tigers tried to rally in the sixth inning as they scored three runs off the bats of Torii Hunter, Alex Avila, and Don Kelly. The Pirates however responded in the bottom of the inning as Russel Martin and Ike Davis hit back-to-back home runs off of Kevin Whelan.
The Tigers put two more runs in the books in the eighth inning as Rajai Davis drove in two runs to cut the lead to 10-6. Travis Snider though hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning off of Phil Coke to make the score 11-6 and cap off the scoring.
With the Tigers loss they fall out of first place as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Oakland A's 3-2 and take a 1/2 game lead over the Tigers.
The Tigers will look to do better tomorrow as they send Robbie Rey to the mound and the Pirates will start Edinson Volquez. Broadcast time is at 6:40 pm on AM 590 WKZO.
