Toledo tap water turned toxic by Lake Erie algae

by

TOLEDO (WKZO) -- About a half million people in the city of Toledo were told early Saturday morning not to drink the tap water because it might be contaminated with toxins.

Tests had revealed that algal blooms in Lake Erie may have released poisons into the system, and that boiling the water might just make it more toxic.

They are trucking in bottled water from all over the region. It may be sometime Sunday before its safe to drink the water again.

Environmental groups say the Algae grows on the wastes from fertilizer, livestock pens, or septic tanks, and anyone who relies on major lakes as their source of drinking water is susceptible if efforts aren't made to contain nutrient polutants.

They say in this case, there are just a few sources that are responsible.

They say it’s a wake-up call for officials to act, and reestablish controls that helped clean up Lake Erie back in the 70’s when similar algal blooms also threatened the water supply for about 11-million Americans.

It was that crisis that sparked the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and the Clean Water Act, and needs to revisited, and enforced.
