LANSING (WKZO) -- There is still a record amount of ice coverage on the Great Lakes as we approach the start of May. As of Saturday, more than 60-percent of Lake Superior was still covered in ice, nearly twice the previous record amount for the lake set in 1979. Overall, the Great Lakes had 35-percent ice cover according to the Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab as of last Wednesday, which beats the previous late-April record of 16-percent in 1979.
