ALLEGAN COUNTY (WKZO) -- One week after a horrendous head-on collision on U.S.-131 that claimed two lives, State Troopers have released the dash-cam videos from that night just north of the Kalamazoo border in Allegan.
The videos from the two cruisers shows just how little chance the troopers had to try and stop wrong way driver Jeremy Smeltzer from Portage, who ignored their flashing lights as he flew by.
What you see next is a shower of broken safety glass as the speeding pick-up plows at full speed into a Mustang driven by Jaryd Ford of Plainwell to the rear of the squad car. '
The Troopers run to the wreckage, and call for help. One trooper attacks the flames with a fire extinguisher while the other pulls survivor Megan Covey from the wreck.
TV-8 reports that the Ford family has considered litigation against the troopers for not doing more, but it’s obvious that there wasn’t time to do much of anything.
State Police have issued a statement saying that getting to the wrong-way driver was their first priority.
