KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- A Kalamazoo woman who was arrested for trying to block the construction of an Enbridge pipeline in Indiana was sentenced to jail this week. Western Michigan University student Jessica Clark was sentenced to 26 days in the Laporte County Jail on Wednesday after she turned down probation, saying she wanted to serve a jail sentence to show solidarity with political prisoners all over the world.
Clark was arrested twice -- once in August and once in September -- for various efforts to stop construction of the Enbridge pipeline in northern Indiana. In both cases, she sat in trees that Enbridge was trying to remove to make way for the pipeline. MLive reports that she was charged with trespassing and theft because she had tied the platform she was on in the tree to an Enbridge bulldozer.
