WAYLAND (WKZO) -- A Candlelight vigil will be held this evening for Jaryd Ford of Plainwell who was killed in a high-speed head-on collision on U.S. 131 early Wednesday morning.
It will be at the Red Barn Restaurant on 10th Street in Martin at 7:30.
State Police are trying to determine why 29-year-old Jeremy Smeltzer of Portage drove for miles in the wrong lane of the highway at high speed, causing that crash just north of the Kalamazoo-Allegan County border.
Smetlzer roared past two state police cruisers that were sent to intercept him and slammed head-on into the Mustang driven by Ford, who died at the scene.
Smeltzer was dead after an Air Care flight to Borgess Medical Center.
Ford’s passenger, Megan Covey of Wayland is listed in good condition at last report.
The Winkle Funeral Home in Otsego is handling arrangements. Visitation is planned for Friday with a funeral on Saturday.
