General Motors suspends engineers, creates internal safety program

DETROIT (WKZO) -- General Motors is creating a Speak Up For Safety Program that will recognize workers' ideas that make vehicles safer and reward employees who speak up when they see something that could impact customer safety. GM CEO Mary Barra says that the company has to embrace a culture where safety and quality come first.

"GM employees should raise safety concerns quickly and forcefully and be recognized for doing so," says Barra.

In the meantime the automaker has suspended two engineers with pay as the investigation continues into faulty ignition switches that caused dozens of accidents and 13-fatalities. It has come to light that engineers working for GM knew about the problem years ago but the company only recently reported the issue and recalled millions of vehicles.
